About Me

Hey, I'm Kevin. I'm a dad, a geek, and a product marketing executive. πŸ€“

I'm currently VP, Product Marketing and Technical Marketing at Zerto, a software startup acquired by HPE. I'm at my best when building new programs that break ground in uncharted territory or scaling existing initiatives to realize a larger strategic vision.

Outside of work, I love to run half marathons, go backcountry hiking, tackle endless home projects, or relax with my wife, son, and two cats. I really enjoy documentaries and weird films. In my free time, I'm also building JobKeeperβ€”it's an app I first built in Ruby on Rails in 2015 before refactoring with AI in 2025.

What I've Done

Careers aren't usually straight lines and mine is no exception. I've had the unique privilege of a diverse background, both personally (e.g. extensive cross-cultural experience from living overseas for 14+ years) and professionally (e.g. both non-profit, startup, and large-cap public company). I cut my teeth early in my career in enablement and technical training β€” great background for eventually moving to product marketing and technical marketing.

Career Highlights

A few favorites from over the years:
  • Building the #1 hot lead generator: a hands-on labs program that enabled on-demand, anytime, anywhere access to our software. I eventually grew it to support 7,000 deployments per year and it became a valuable resource for prospects, partners, and employees (especially presales)
  • ZertoCON! Our annual user conference ran for four years (3 in Boston, 1 in Nashville) until we went virtual during COVID. I'm immensely proud of the work I did, and all our teams did, to pull off these events and grow it to 800 attendees
  • Zerto 10 product launch: I've run many launches and announcements, but Zerto 10 was a highlight. I'm proud of the vision I set and we all executed on for a hybrid event: live on-site at HQ, streamed online, and small watch parties in various regions. I had the privilege of doing one of the last interviews with hacker Kevin Mitnick just a couple months before he passed.
  • Business Case Builder: this ROI/TCO tool became a hit with sellers and partners alike and it had a real impact -- deals with it were 3X larger than those without. I created the financial model then self-taught myself Angular to build the MVP, then pulled in a real web developer to make it production-ready.
  • Team growth: I'm proud of my leadership skills and worked hard to be effective, both as a leader of one person and then as I scaled the team to 13. I've hired & onboarded quickly, kept attrition low, promoted whenever possible, and coached through role changes and company re-orgs and everything in between.

How I Work

I think modern product marketing in a B2B SaaS context must be full stack. Just as a full stack developer must know both backend and frontend, so too do I focus on the work that powers the marketing engine (backend) as well as the creative public-facing work that's dependent on it (frontend). Across both, my leadership skills underpin it all to ensure everyone wins together.

Here's what full stack product marketing looks like for me and where I'm most skilled:

Backend

  • Product positioning and messaging
  • Buyer personas and ICP
  • Market research
  • Competitive intelligence
  • Win/loss analysis
  • Sales enablement

Frontend

  • Content marketing
  • Events and conferences
  • Analyst relations and public relations
  • Product launches and new releases
  • Co-marketing with partners and alliances

Leadership

  • Cross-functional engagement (esp. with Sales, Product, Engineering, and Demand Gen)
  • Team management, incl. managing managers
  • Leading with empathy and strengths-based coaching

Some areas where I've collaborated & influenced, but not directly owned β€” though I'd love to in the future: customer marketing, partner marketing, and digital demand gen.

How I Lead

I believe in leading by example and empowering others to do their best work. I follow just a few principles to get the best out of my teams:

Start with trust

Everyone is an adult and everyone is a professional. My job isn't to micromanage them, hold their hand, or assign to-dos.

Set the vision and define success

Leading with empathy and kindness doesn't mean lowering standards or not pushing people to do hard work and achieve big things. I share the big picture and outline the scope, then empower others to execute with efficiency.

Unblock my team

I believe so much of my job is to remove obstacles and take the heat from others. The buck stops with me when things go wrong, but I put my team front and center when things go right.

Be a teammate first, manager second

Very few people like being bossed around. Top-down, command-oriented, do-what-I-say-no-matter-what leadership is not my style. My teams can rely on me as a collaborator who'll roll up his sleeves and dive into the work with them. They engage with me as colleagues first and foremost, not as direct reports.
